Limitations of Bayesian Evidence Applied to Cosmology

چکیده
There has been increasing interest in applying Bayesian techniques for model selection (such as Bayesian Evidence) to problems in cosmology. A typical example is in assessing whether observational data favour a cosmological constant over evolving dark energy. In this paper, the example of dark energy is used to illustrate limitations in the application of Bayesian Evidence associated with subjective judgements concerning the choice of model and priors.

Bayes in the sky: Bayesian inference and model selection in cosmology
The application of Bayesian methods in cosmology and astrophysics has flourished over the past decade, spurred by data sets of increasing size and complexity. In many respects, Bayesian methods have proven to be vastly superior to more traditional statistical tools, offering the advantage of higher efficiency and of a consistent conceptual basis for dealing with the problem of induction in the ...
متن کاملPseudo-Likelihood Inference Underestimates Model Uncertainty: Evidence from Bayesian Nearest Neighbours
When using the K-nearest neighbours (KNN) method, one often ignores the uncertainty in the choice of K. To account for such uncertainty, Bayesian KNN (BKNN) has been proposed and studied (Holmes and Adams 2002 Cucala et al. 2009). We present some evidence to show that the pseudo-likelihood approach for BKNN, even after being corrected by Cucala et al. (2009), still significantly underest...
متن کاملHow Do Agricultural Subsectors Respond to Productivity Shocks? Evidence from a Bayesian DSGE Model in Iran
Understanding the dynamics of productivity shocks is instrumental if we are to identify the sources of economic growth. This paper, investigates dynamic effects of positives productivity shocks to agricultural subsectors during the period from 1991-2015, by disaggregating agricultural sector in Iran into four key subsectors (crops, livestock, fishing and forestry) through an estimated DSGE mode...
متن کاملA Bayesian Networks Approach to Reliability Analysis of a Launch Vehicle Liquid Propellant Engine
This paper presents an extension of Bayesian networks (BN) applied to reliability analysis of an open gas generator cycle Liquid propellant engine (OGLE) of launch vehicles. There are several methods for system reliability analysis such as RBD, FTA, FMEA, Markov Chains, and etc. But for complex systems such as LV, they are not all efficiently applicable due to failure dependencies between compo...
متن کاملBayesian evidence and predictivity of the inflationary paradigm
In this paper we consider the issue of paradigm evaluation by applying Bayes’ theorem along the following nested hierarchy of progressively more complex structures: i) parameter estimation (within a model), ii) model selection and comparison (within a paradigm), iii) paradigm evaluation. In such a hierarchy the Bayesian evidence works both as the posterior’s normalization at a given level and a...
